This small community nestled between Tempe and Phoenix is primarily residential with retail and service businesses catering to locals and visitors. Guadalupe's population is mostly Hispanic, and the residents maintain a strong cultural and ethnic identity with their rustic Mexican restaurants, markets selling brightly-colored wares, and fresh fruit and vegetables at roadside stands. Named for the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico, Guadalupe was founded by Yaqui Indians who fled their homeland in Sonora at the turn of the century. Manufacturing, agriculture and hospitality services also provide jobs. Most residents commute to Phoenix or neighboring Tempe for employment.

Activities and Attractions

Visitors to Guadalupe may think they've suddenly been transported to Mexico. A large traditional Mexican plaza in the center of town is bordered by two buildings of historic significance, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the Yaqui Temple (El Templo). Every Easter, ancient and sacred Yaqui ceremonial rites are held in the plaza, as are many religious festivals throughout the year. The main shopping center is the El Tianguis Mercado, where colorful items from Mexico may be found. Local attractions include Arizona Mills, Guadalupe Cemetery, and one of the only authentic Mexican bakeries in the Valley.
